The WSA is celebrating its 5th anniversary by welcoming numerous renowned composers from home and abroad in Ghent. In just five years, the WSA has grown into a unique event highlighting the importance of music in film. During the WSA Ceremony & Concert, Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller receive a Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of their contribution to film music.

This year, the World Soundtrack Awards Ceremony & Concert takes place on the 15th of October at De Bijloke in Ghent. We are delighted to welcome the WSA Discovery of 2004, Argentinian composer Gustavo Santaolalla, as Guest of Honour. The Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented to Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. Belgian singer-songwriter and composer Raymond van het Groenewoud will perform alongside British composer and Guest of Honour Rachel Portman. This musical evening is accompanied by the Flemish Radio Orchestra, conducted by maestro Dirk Brossé.

Due to technical developments, sound as such has become increasingly important in film. The Film Music Seminar on the 17th of October is themed “To Score or not to Score. That’s the Question”. It’s a seminar on sound design and music in films, on the impact of scores and the boundary between music and sound.

On the 20th of October, Film Fest Gent and the World Soundtrack Academy put the spotlight on the often overlooked tradition of Polish Film Music at the Vlaamse Opera. The music of Guest of Honour Zbigniew Preisner is played alongside that of Kaczmarek, Kilar, Komeda, Konieczny and Lorenc. The WSA offers a night filled with discoveries, recognition and amazement, again conducted by maestro Dirk Brossé and performed by our beloved Flemish Radio Orchestra.
