The presentation of the World Soundtrack Awards and the accompanying ceremony and concert are the annual highlight for film music lovers and professionals. The international film music world gathers again in Ghent for the 9th edition.

This year’s World Soundtrack Award Ceremony & Concert takes place on the 17th of October at the Bijloke in Ghent. The programme will include the outstanding scores by our two guests of honour Alexandre Desplat and Marvin Hamlisch, alongside a selection from the works of last year’s Discovery Award winner Marc Streitenfeld. At the ceremony, composer Marvin Hamlisch will also be presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award for his brilliant and continued impact on the film music industry.

On the 15th of October, this year’s tribute concert Shigeru Umebayashi in Concert takes place at the Vooruit in Ghent. Umebayashi is an internationally renowned composer best known for his collaborations with director Wong Kar-Wai, such as his score for In the Mood for Love. He is also the composer and music producer for Yimou Zhang’s iconic House of Flying Daggers and Curse of The Golden Flower. Like the WSA Ceremony, the tribute concert is performed by the Brussels Philharmonic, conducted by maestro Dirk Brossé.

In the Handelsbeurs Gent, Alexandre Desplat gives a concert together with the Traffic Quintet on the 14th of October. The concert Divine Féminin is a musical tribute to some of the most iconic femme fatale actresses, such as Marilyn Monroe, Janet Leigh, Sharon Stone, Jeanne Moreau, and Nicole Kidman. Other events include the annual Film Music Seminar, in which Anne Sytske Keijser offers her insight on Chinese cinema and its relationship with music, and composer Shigeru Umebayashi delves deeper in his scores for Chinese and Japanese cinema.
