At 16th edition of the World Soundtrack Awards Gala on 19 October, the winner of the Public Choice Award will be announced, and it is up to you to select your favorite! You can cast your vote for your favorite original score of the past 12 months (for any feature film released between 1 JULY, 2015 and 30 JUNE, 2016) and have a chance to win one of the 10 #WSAwards surprise gift bags!

‘Gosses de Tokyo’ or ‘I Was Born, But…’ is Yasujirō Ozu’s most famous silent movie. Told from the rascally point of view of a couple of stubborn little boys, this enchanting 1930'ies comedy hits home because of its sharp observation of social structures. In a special commission by the Ars Musica Festival and Film Fest Gent, Gwenaël Grisi adds a musical dimension to this soundless masterpiece.

Belgian composer Dirk Brossé has been nominated for the soundtrack of the Dutch film 'In my fathers garden' ('Knielen op een bed violen') by Ben Sombogaart for the Golden Calf award. The soundtrack was recorded by Brussels Philharmonic, with whom Brossé has a long-standing collaboration.

Japanese composer and musician Ryuichi Sakamoto (‘Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence’, ‘The Last Emperor’, ‘The Revenant’, 'Wild Palms'), American composers Jeff Beal (‘House of Cards’, 'Carnivale', 'Rome') and Jeff Russo (‘Fargo’, 'The Night Of', 'The Returned') and Karsten Fundal (‘Shadow World’) & Johan Grimonprez ('Shadow World') are this year's Film Music Seminar guests. The Film Music Seminar is annually organised by Film Fest Gent in collaboration with the University College, School of Arts and curated by dr. Martine Huvenne. Year after year, important film music professionals teach participants about film music or sound design. This year's Film Music Seminar will mainly focus on TV scoring and will take place on Tuesday 18 October 2016 from 09:30 to 16:30 @ Kinepolis Ghent.

Last week Film Fest Gent and Brussels Philharmonic completed the recording of the anthology of Ryuichi Sakamoto’s oeuvre in Flagey. The recordings include fragments from ‘Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence’ and ‘The Revenant’ and were led by music director of Film Fest Gent Dirk Brossé. The recorded compilation-CD will be launched during the 43rd Film Fest Gent and the 16th World Soundtrack Awards on 19 October, where Sakamoto will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award.

The World Soundtrack Academy released a second wave of nominees for Discovery of the Year, the SABAM Award for Best Young International Composer and Public Choice Award. Last month the nominees for Best Film Composer, Best TV Composer and Best Original Song were revealed.
