This first wave of the 2019 World Soundtrack Award Nominees includes multiple Academy Award® and Golden Globe® nominees, the best of contemporary film and television music as well as hiphop's biggest rock star Post Malone and other pop artists.

The World Soundtrack Awards will pay a tribute to an icon of Belgian film music, Frédéric Devreese, who recently celebrated his 90th birthday.

The World Soundtrack Awards will welcome composer Krzysztof Penderecki, our generation's most outstanding musician, known for creating inventive and unconventional music, he has worked with world-famous directors such as Stanley Kubrick, Martin Scorsese, David Lynch and William Friedkin, many of whom still rely on his work.

After having released the names of the nominees for Best Original Song Written Directly for a Film, Best Film Composer of the Year and Best Television Composer of the Year, the World Soundtrack Academy announces a second wave of nominees for Best Original Score for a Belgian Production, Discovery of the Year, SABAM Award for the Most Original Composition by a Young International Composer and the Public Choice Award. For the 19th edition, The World Soundtrack Academy welcomes a remarkably diverse group of nominees, in background as well as training and medium.

For the 19th year in a row, the World Soundtrack Awards were announced during Film Fest Gent. The World Soundtrack Awards, one of the most important film music awards, place an emphasis on the oeuvres of special contributors to the world of film music. This year's winners are Nicholas Britell, Hildur Guðnadóttir, Lady Gaga, Frédéric Vercheval, Michael Abels, John Powell and Pierre Charles. Frédéric Devreese and Krzysztof Penderecki were both honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award.

On Monday (6 July 2020), the World Soundtrack Academy and Film Fest Ghent were saddened by the news that Ennio Morricone had deceased at the age of 91 in his hometown of Rome. We would like to express our condolences and deepest sympathy to his family members. As a festival that focuses on film music, we feel highly privileged to have welcomed the world-renowned Italian composer as a guest of honour twice (in 1987 at the festival and in 2000 at a concert organized by Film Fest Ghent), where he performed his music live with the Belgian National Orchestra.

The International Master in Composition for Screen has been running since September 2018, and it is now time to select new students for the academic term 2020-2022.
