Margaret Hermant
Margaret Hermant is a Brussels-based composer, violinist and harpist whose work is increasingly centered on film scoring and narrative music. A graduate of the Royal Conservatory of Brussels and a founding member of Echo Collective, she has developed a distinctive cinematic language that bridges contemporary classical composition, sound design and emotional storytelling.
Her artistic path has been profoundly shaped by collaborations with some of the most influential voices in contemporary film and post-classical music, including Jóhann Jóhannsson, Dustin O’Halloran, Adam Wiltzie, A Winged Victory for the Sullen, Christina Vantzou and Rutger Hoedemaekers. Working alongside composers whose music has defined the sound of modern cinema has deeply informed her own approach to composition, where atmosphere, texture and narrative are inseparable.
Since 2020, Margaret Hermant has focused extensively on composing for film and audiovisual works. Her growing catalogue includes original scores for Mallorca Confidencial, A la Cara, Touché, SIM, Zazarano and Le Cœur Noir des Forêts, among other projects. Her music is characterized by an intimate yet expansive sound world, where harp, violin and electronics interact to create emotionally charged landscapes that serve the narrative while maintaining a strong musical identity.
In 2024, she joined the film music agency Strike a Score, further consolidating her activity as a composer for screen-based productions and expanding her collaborations within the international audiovisual industry.
A defining aspect of her compositional practice is her close collaboration with sound engineer, producer and co-creator Fabien Leseure. Together they have developed a highly distinctive workflow in which composition, orchestration, recording and sound design evolve simultaneously. Their approach blurs the boundaries between acoustic performance and electronic manipulation, treating sound itself as a narrative element. Through this dialogue between instrumental writing and sonic experimentation, they create immersive scores that explore texture, space, silence and emotional nuance.
This collaborative vision is also reflected in her debut solo album Freedom, released on Neue Meister. Entirely composed and produced with Fabien Leseure, the album unfolds as a sequence of cinematic scenes, revealing her fascination with storytelling through sound and her ability to build evocative musical worlds beyond the screen.
Alongside her work as a composer, Margaret Hermant has contributed to numerous international film and television productions as a performer and creative collaborator, recording harp and violin for soundtracks including Lion (Garth Davis), No Man’s Land (Oded Ruskin), The Princess (Ed Perkins), Entrapped (Baltasar Kormákur), Le Fidèle (Michaël R. Roskam), Bitter Flowers (Olivier Meys) and The Water Man (David Oyelowo).
Combining the sensitivity of a performer, the vision of a composer and a deep understanding of sound as a storytelling medium, Margaret Hermant has established herself as a singular voice in contemporary film music, crafting scores that resonate long after the final image has faded.
