A new soundtrack for Gosses de Tokyo (1932) - October 2016

‘Gosses de Tokyo’ or ‘I Was Born, But…’ is Yasujirō Ozu’s most famous silent movie. Told from the rascally point of view of a couple of stubborn little boys, this enchanting 1930'ies comedy hits home because of its sharp observation of social structures. In a special commission by the Ars Musica Festival and Film Fest Gent, Gwenaël Grisi adds a musical dimension to this soundless masterpiece.

Although in a contemporary and understandable language, the young composer keeps away from the clichés of burlesque cinema. Just like the images, often shot at children’s height, Grisi uses a child’s perspective to have both sound and vision enhance and complete each other.

This film concert is part of the festival programme of Film Fest Gent and World Soundtrack Awards, held between 11 > 21 October 2016.
