GAIKA remixes 'Akira': Dark UK grime meets legendary anime.
“I have been hugely influenced by this film and all it inspired, it burned itself onto my mind. This work is a remix in every dimension.” - GAIKA
30 years ago (!) the Japanese anime film Akira came out, written and directed by Katsuhiro Otomo. This casually brilliant post-apocalyptic anime – based on the manga comic series of the same name – soon acquired cult status. With its kinetic energy, limitless imagination and dystopian themes, Akira influenced a whole generation of manga and science fiction lovers.
One of those fans is London producer and rapper GAIKA, who performed at Vooruit in March 2018, providing the phenomenal closing act to the hip-hop festival Out The Frame. His work is dark, experimental and catchy as hell: imagine a mix of triphop, dancehall and grime, streaked through with afrofuturistic politics. During VIDEODROOM, GAIKA pays homage to Akira with a complete remix of the film in both sound and image. An all-new, all-enveloping, once-in-a-lifetime experience!
