Feathers on Wings vzw offers a completely new take on silent film. With their debut project Caligari, they have created an original soundtrack for Robert Wiene’s silent film classic, The Cabinet of Dr Caligari (1919). Their brainchild will be featured at the International Film Festival of Flanders on Thursday 17 October 2002.
With Caligari, they present film and contemporary music enthusiasts with a comprehensive project. The aim is to engage a broad audience in a contemporary way with the rich historical dimension of the medium of film. In the run-up to the big-screen screening at the Floraliapaleis, two side events will take place. During the workshop Silent film, experienced differently in the multi-purpose tent next to the Decascoop, participants will be introduced to the style and limitations of silent film.
This journey of discovery into the classic film past is then continued through the fascinating story of contemporary forms of film technology. As a warm-up for the screening, a presentation on the central film will be given in collaboration with Ghent University and its own film club Filmplateau. In this presentation, various aspects of The Cabinet of Dr Caligari will be explored to provide an enriching perspective on the screening.
The film will be screened by the Cinemobiel, a fire engine converted into a mobile outdoor cinema. The musical accompaniment is provided by: Thomas Desmet (violin, accordion, piano, vocals), Alexander Kerkhof (guitar), Stefan Vanlokeren (bass, guitar, vocals) and Joris van Eeckhoven (drums, samples, guitar, vocals). The adapted expressionist design was conceived and developed by Kortrijk-based artist Branko.
