Gabriel Yared

Oscar-winning composer Gabriel Yared is one of the most well-respected composers in film. Yared won an Academy Award for his score to Anthony Minghella’s The English Patient, which also won him a BAFTA, a Golden Globe and a Grammy. Yared was originally known for his work in French cinema, starting with Jean-Luc Godard, and later Jean-Jacques Beineix (Betty Blue) and Jean-Jacques Annaud (The Lover). He also composed ballet music for works such as Clavigo for The Paris Opera, and Wayne McGregor’s Raven Girl for the Royal Opera Ballet.
He worked with Xavier Dolan on The Death and Life of John F. Donovan, and earlier on Dolan’s sixth feature film, It’s Only the End of the World which won the Grand Prix at Cannes in 2016. Yared was an official member of the Cannes Film Festival Jury in 2017. In December 2017, Yared performed a concert of his film music at the Paris Philharmonie, alongside the London Symphony Orchestra. His most recent work includes: The Happy Prince, directed by Rupert Everett, Michel Ocelot's latest film, Dilili à Paris, and Judy, a Judy Garland biopic starring the award-winning Renée Zellweger and directed by Rupert Gould. In 2019, Yared received the esteemed Max Steiner Award, presented by the city of Vienna at the Hollywood in Vienna concert gala, where his music was performed by the ORF Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra and a number of internationally acclaimed soloists. In 2020, Yared scored the music for Jimmy Keyrouz’s first feature film Broken Keys which was selected for the 2020 edition of the Cannes Film Festival. Yared also composed the music for E. Ponti’s The Life Ahead starring Sophia Loren, a deeply masterful and moving score.
In October 2020, Yared was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award by the World Soundtrack Academy at Film Fest Ghent. His music was performed by the Brussels Philharmonic and broadcast worldwide at a special online ceremony. In January 2021, Yared gave a concert alongside the Radio France Philharmonic Orchestra and Choir in Paris and in June 2021, he received the prestigious Michel Legrand Honorary Award for his career as a composer. Yared is currently working on Pietro Marcello’s film Scarlet.
