Each year Film Fest Gent and World Soundtrack Awards organise a Film Music Seminar in collaboration with the KASK, School of Arts and curated by dr. Martine Huvenne and Peter Vermeersch. Year after year, important film music professionals teach participants about film music and/or sound design.

This year's Film Music Seminar will take place on Tuesday 17 October 2017 from 09:00 to 16:00 at Vooruit Ghent with a focus on the different roles of jazz music in films. Is it the music genre of a specific ethnic group? Is it an essential aspect of crime films or musicals? What is its potential in such films as ‘Birdman’? Is an orchestrated jazz theme still considered jazz? Or does jazz require a different form of cinema that centres around improvisation? Dr. Martine Huvenne and Peter Vermeersch moderate a debate with David Shire, Walter Murch, Joe Kraemer and Terence Blanchard.
