Delta Lady Rita Coolidge started her career as a backup vocalist for artists such as Ray Charles and Jackie Wilson. She was asked to join the Delaney and Bonnie tour, followed by the Joe Cocker and Leon Russell "Mad Dogs & Englishmen Tour" As a part of this legendary rock 'n roll band, she instantly gained worldwide success and signed a recording contract with A&M Records. She went on to record over 20 albums, three of those with her husband Kris Kristofferson and won two Grammy Awards.
During her career, Coolidge scored several other hits, like 'Superstar', 'We're All Alone', 'Higher & Higher' and 'The Way You Do The Things You Do'. She also collaborated with other artists like Kris Kristofferson, Ray Charles, Eric Clapton, Joe Cocker, Roger Waters and George Harrison among many others.
Coolidge is very popular in the musical world. Stephen Stills wrote the songs 'Cherokee', 'The Raven' and 'Sugar Babe' in her honour. Leon Russell did the same thing with 'Delta Lady', 'A Song For You' and 'Hummingbird'. She also collaborated with some other famous artists like Ray Charles, Eric Clapton and George Harrison. She co-starred with Barbara Streisand in the Academy Award winning 'A Star Is Born'.
On her album And So Is Love, Rita Coolidge reinvented herself as a jazz singer. Her new album, A Rita Coolidge Christmas, is due to be released in Fall 2012 on 429 Records/Universal.
