WSA Film Music Days - From Policy To Practice: A Discussion With The European Composer & Songwriter Alliance

Together with Sarah Glennane, ECSA president Helienne Lindvall, composers Luis Ivars and Tina Pepper elaborate on how audiovisual legislation can inadvertently impact the composer’s daily artistic practice. Whether they have the rights to perform their own music, are able to share in the success of their work, or can afford to speak up for themselves. The growing use of artificial intelligence and data driven algorithms undeniably influences the composer’s position as an autonomous artist and the ecosystem as a whole, leading to a decrease of (musical) diversity. As a European non-profit, ECSA continues to raise awareness on these malpractices.

The European Composer & Songwriter Alliance (ECSA), founded in 2007 and based in Brussels, is committed to defending and promoting the rights and interests of music authors on a national, European and international level. They advocate for fair commercial terms and work to strengthen the social and economic development of music creation. With 57 member organisations from 29 European countries and a wide range of stakeholders from various cultural and creative sectors, ECSA represents more than 30,000 composers and songwriters. The organisation is this year’s recipient of the WSA Industry Award.
