Edition 2010
On 20 October, Film Fest Gent and Hogeschool Gent present a unique film music seminar with composer Stephen Warbeck (Shakespeare In Love, Billy Elliott), who will share his approach to film music through a live performance and a selection of film clips. The central question of this seminar is to what extent film music contributes to the narrative structure of a film.
The World Soundtrack Academy attaches great importance to the seminar and therefore every year selects someone from its own ranks to lead it. This year, Stephen Warbeck dives deeper in the influence of music on film, storytelling and the viewer. Warbeck is composer of the film scores of Shakespeare in Love (1998) (Academy Award), Billy Elliott (2000) and Captain Corelli's Mandolin (2001), among others. He began his career as an actor, playing accordion in his own group, The Kippers. As a composer of film music, he manages to subtly intertwine his creativity with the narrative line devised by the filmmaker.
