WSA - Film Music Seminar

Edition 2005
"To Score or not to Score. That's the Question". On 17 October 2005, several guests share their ideas about sound in film.
Apart from the actual film music, sound in general is becoming increasingly important. This is mainly due to technological developments. Just think of the opening of Francis Ford Coppola's The Conversation, or David Lynch's Blue Velvet. Their composition of sound seems to have a musical function. The term “sound design” refers not only to the design of sound, but also to a “musical” use of it. In the tradition of “musique concrète”, in which recorded sound becomes matter for composition, the relationship between image and music is redefined.

Michel Chion, one of the most authoritative authors when it comes to “film music”, describes how we connect the course of sound to our physical and psychic experiences. Furthermore, he talks about the energetic aspect of sound. Larry Sider (School of Sound, London), Mart Van den Busken, Eavesdropper, Michael Weilacher, Silvia Defrance, Hans Spilliaert and Frodo Kuipers also share their insights in conversation with Martine Huvenne. The seminar offers an analytical insight into the potentially manipulative use of sound tape in films and animated films.
