With this WSAcademy newsletter, we are happy to let you know that in 2023 the WSA will pay tribute to music in video games with the concert PRESS PLAY: Music in Games and with the launch of the new WSA Game Music Award (voted by the audience). We want to thank everyone of the Academy who helped making this happen! At the WSA Ceremony & Concert, Italian composer Nicola Piovani, best known for his Oscar-winning music for La vita è bella, will be presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award. Tickets are now on sale for both concerts. As a WSAcademy member you can pre-register for the VIP industry packages by sending a mail to info@worldsoundtrackawards.com.

Furthermore we look forward to receiving your submissions in the different WSA categories from next month onwards. Get all the details you need to know by checking out the information provided below.

Submissions open from 17 April

As an Academy member, you will again have the opportunity to submit scores for the WSAwards. Here are the most important facts you should know:

  • Submissions will be open from 17 April until 15 June 2023.
  • To submit you will have to log in to your MyFFG account. All submission forms will be available on the WSA Submissions tab in your personal MyFFG account.
  • Only academy members can submit scores for these 3 categories: Film Composer of the Year, Television Composer of the Year and Best Original Song. There is no fee for these categories.
  • There is a registration fee for submission of the Discovery Award, except for composers that are Academy members and are eligible in this category.
  • To check all eligibility rules, please check the WSA rule book on our website.

Remember 22 October 2022? What an amazing night for film music that was! Jonny Greenwood, Nicholas Britell & Eiko Ishibashi may have grabbed the top prizes, but it's fair to say all of us won that day by being together again to celebrate the art of composing for screen. And we are very much looking forward to making the WSA2023 even greater! The event will take place on 21 October 2023. Tickets for the 2023 World Soundtrack Awards Ceremony & Concert are now for sale via our website and as an Academy member you are able to purchase VIP packages including VIP tickets, you can pre-register by sending a mail to info@worldsoundtrackawards.com.

Italian composer Nicola Piovani to receive Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2023 World Soundtrack Awards

The word is out! On Saturday 21 October 2023 we will welcome the Italian composer Nicola Piovani as one of our guests of the 23rd edition of the World Soundtrack Awards. The World Soundtrack Academy honours Piovani, best known for his Oscar-winning music for La vita è bella, with the WSA Lifetime Achievement Award. We are also excited to welcome back the incredible Eiko Ishibashi, who won the Discovery of the Year Award last year for her mesmerising jazzy score in the film Drive My Car (2021).

PRESS PLAY: Music in Games Concert | 19 October 2023

On 19 October, game music is front and centre during the PRESS PLAY: Music in Games concert at Film Fest Gent 2023. The concert will feature music by - amongst others - renowned video game composer Austin Wintory, whose works include the soundtracks for Journey and Abzû. Wintory is also the host of the night. Brussels Philharmonic will perform his music live, including the Grammy-nominated score for Journey. The festival is dedicated to recognising the the significance of game music as a genre and to highlighting the immense talent behind it. Therefore, Film Fest Gent presents a new WSAward: the WSA Game Music Award (voted by the audience). This new prize celebrates the best original score for a video game and/or other interactive media.

WSA Composition Contest 2023

The WSA Composition Contest 2023 has kicked off. We invite screen composers under the age of 36 to participate in this year's Contest and and to have a chance at winning the Sabam Award for Best Original Composition by a Young Composer (worth €2.500). This year's contestants are invited to write a score for an excerpt from the game Abzû, from Giant Squid Studios and with music originally composed by Austin Wintory. The game lets you dive into the depths of the sea and explore enchanting ocean environments. As per tradition, the scores by the tree finalists will be performed live by Brussels Philharmonic during the World Soundtrack Awards Ceremony & Concert on 21 October. Deadline to participate: 17 May. Don't hesitate to send the page on our website with further information to young composers that might be interested in participating.
