Here in Ghent we are in full swing with the preparations for the upcoming WSA submissions and the WSA Film Music Days (15 - 17 October). In this WSAcademy newsletter you can read all about the upcoming submission process and the first concert announcements. As a WSAcademy member you can now also pre-register for the industry packages and send us your personal news for the upcoming newsletter.

Your membership renewal for 2024

We noticed that you did not yet have the chance to renew your WSAcademy membership for 2024. If you are interested in doing so and keep receiving these newsletters, please register before 15 April. You can do so by logging in to your personal MyFFG account, and fill in this form and pay the membership fee. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact us at info@worldsoundtrackawards.com.

First programme announcements

WSAwards Ceremony & Concert

We are proud to announce French composer, pianist and conductor Philippe Rombi as this year's guest of honour. On 16 October the audience at De Bijloke will be delighted by a selection of his work. Rombi is known for his beautifully composed scores for François Ozon's films such as Swimming Pool (2003), Potiche (2010), Jeune et jolie (2013) and most recently, Mon crime(2023). This will mark his third visit to Ghent as he was present for the premiere of Joyeux Noël in 2005 and was a member of the international jury in 2008. Simon Franglen (Discovery of the Year 2023) will also return to Ghent and perform his acclaimed score for Avatar: The Way of Water (2022).

WSA Concert James Horner Bruin Liggend Extra 1

James Horner Tribute Concert

One day later, on 17 October, we will pay tribute to the legendary composer James Horner with a unique concert filled with his most iconic scores. Horner left an immense musical legacy, composing for James Cameron's Titanic(1997) and two other Oscar winners for Best Film (Braveheart, 1995; and A Beautiful Mind, 2001). An impressive selection of Horner's scores will be curated by Discovery of 2023 Simon Franglen, who worked together with Horner for, among others, Titanic and Avatar. Maestro Dirk Brossé will conduct the Brussels Philharmonic in this musical celebration, as well as the WSA Concert one day earlier. We can't wait to experience this together with all of you!

Get ready to submit your scores!

Submissions will be open from 16 April.

As an Academy member, you will again have the opportunity to submit scores for the WSAwards. Here are the most important facts you should know:

Submissions will be open from 16 April until 15 June.
To submit you will have to log in to your MyFFG account. All submission forms will be available on the WSA Submissions tab in your personal MyFFG account.
Only academy members can submit scores for 4 categories: Film Composer of the Year, Television Composer of the Year, Best Original Song and the WSA Game Music Award.
WSAcademy membership is not required to submit for the Discovery award. There is a registration fee. However, eligible composers who are members of the WSAcademy are waived from this fee when registering.
To be aware of all eligibility rules, please check the WSA Rule Book on our website.

Pre-registration for the WSA Industry Packages

WSA Composition Contest 2024

Young aspiring composers under the age of 36 can register for this year's WSA Composition Contest! Participants are invited to show their composing skills by writing a symphonic score for a selected film excerpt. This year, The Witches (1990) from director Nicolas Roeg will be focused on. The jury will choose three finalists, whose compositions will be performed at the annual WSAwards Ceremony and Concert, after which the winner of the Sabam Award for Best Original Composition by a Young Composer will be announced. Submissions for the WSA Composition Contest are open until 16 May 2024.

Meet Sophie in Marseille

From 4 to 6 April Sophie Joos (Music Projects Coordinator) will be attending the Festival International Music & Cinema Marseille. The WSA team is always very excited to see Academy members in person, let us know if you will be attending the MCM festival and send Sophie a mail!
