Thursday 20 October 2022

10:30 - Buyouts and other unfair contractual practices: what prospects for the Belgian composer?

This panel talk is organised in collaboration with the European Composer Songwriter Alliance (ECSA). The panellists will discuss buyouts, their threat to composers and their presence in Europe. Anselm Kreuzer (Composers’ Club) will serve as a moderator. Panellists are among others Marc du Moulin (ECSA), Hans Helewaut (BSCG) and Luc Gulinck (De Muziekgilde).

14:00 - Film Composer & Film Producer: Balancing a Budget

This panel talk aims to bring the professions of film producer and film composer closer together. Through personal experiences, case studies and pitfalls to avoid, producers Peter Bouckaert (Eyeworks) and Annemie Degryse (Lumière) will discuss how they budget a film score, while composers Michelino Bisceglia and Liesa Van der Aa will shed light on what goes into composing a score and how said budget is spent. This talk is organised in collaboration with the Belgian Screen Composers Guild. Valerie Dobbelaere will serve as a moderator.

15:30 - Composer’s Talk: Mark Isham

Film composer and jazz artist Mark Isham's outstanding musical voice can be heard in memorable scores such as for Judas and the Black Messiah (Shaka King) and Crash (Paul Haggis). Isham also scored A River Runs Through It (Robert Redford) which received both an Oscar and a Grammy nomination. For Brian De Palma’s The Black Dahlia, he was awarded Best Score by the International Film Music Critics Association. Mark Isham will discuss his career with moderator and fellow composer Ruben De Gheselle, who won last year’s Georges Delerue Award for his score for Clara Sola.

20:00 - Korean Composers Concert

On 20 October, Film Fest Gent will be serving up a musical trip to South Korea with the Korean Composers Concert, a concert entirely devoted to the best that Korean music for screen has to offer. Brussels Philharmonic, conducted by Maestro Dirk Brossé, will perform music by Cho Young-wuk (Oldboy, The Handmaiden), the go-to composer of Park Chan-wook, and Lee Byeong-woo who worked with Bong Joon-ho on Mother and The Host. Both composers will be present at the concert. The music of Jung Jae-il will also have its place at the Korean Composers Concert. His scores for cultural phenomena Parasite and Squid Game - amongst others - will be performed live.

Friday 21 October 2022

10:30 - Music in Nature Documentaries

How does a composer (under)score nature? Composers Bruno Coulais, Dirk Brossé and Nainita Desai will discuss their experiences scoring for nature documentaries. Film (music) journalist Robin Broos will moderate this talk.

13:00 - Creative Partnership: Johnny Jewel, Nico Leunen & Fien Troch

A conversation between Chromatics frontman Johnny Jewel (known for the soundtrack of Nicolas Winding Refn’s Drive), Belgium’s most sought-after editor Nico Leunen (Ad Astra, Beautiful Boy, Broken Circle Breakdown) and Belgian director Fien Troch (Kid). Jewel scored Ryan Gosling’s directorial debut Lost River, which was edited by Nico Leunen, and Fien Troch’s Home, which was also edited by Nico Leunen. Journalist Tim Greiving (NPR / Washington Post / LA Times) will moderate their Creative Partnership talk.

15:00 - Creative Partnership: David Lowery & Daniel Hart

Director David Lowery and composer Daniel Hart will soon be celebrating their 15th anniversary: they became inseparable after working together on Lowery's feature debut St. Nick in 2009. Film and music are so intrinsically intertwined in their projects that it is impossible to imagine Lowery's work without hearing Hart's soundtrack. Journalist Tim Greiving (NPR / Washington Post / LA Times) will moderate their Creative Partnership talk. Moreover, during Film Fest Gent you can (re)discover the oeuvre of David Lowery and Daniel Hart with a retrospective that includes Pete's Dragon (2016), A Ghost Story (2017), The Old Man & The Gun (2018) and The Green Knight (2021).

19:30 - Album Release & Listening Session: Evgueni Galperine’s Theory of Becoming

Evgueni Galperine, who composed the dreamy score of Film Fest Gent Explore Award winner Gagarine with his brother Sacha, as well as the music for Golden Lion winner The Happening and the HBO miniseries Scenes of a Marriage, will present his new album Theory of Becoming at Film Fest Gent. Moreover, Galperine asked four filmmakers to make images to his music, which will be exclusively shown during the listening session of the album at Film Fest Gent. Galperine will be present for an introduction and a Q&A.

Saturday 22 October
