20:00 Cinematic Collaboration: Dustin O'Halloran & Hauschka

Though pianist-composers O’Halloran and Hauschka are longtime friends, Garth Davis’ Lion marks their first cinematic collaboration. Lion (2016) tells the journey of Indian boy Saroo, adopted by an Australian family, who decides to find his biological family and go home.

The soundtrack of this movie forms the starting point of this concert. Improvising on the Lion themes, Hauschka - master of the prepared piano - and Dustin O’Halloran - famous for his minimalist vibes and ambient-like productions - musically challenge each other, each at their piano.

20:00-21:30 2001 and Beyond: A Symphonic Odyssey

Stanley Kubrick's groundbreaking masterpiece '2001: A Space Odyssey' is exactly fifty years old in 2018 and that is worth celebrating. Under the title '2001 and Beyond: A Symphonic Odyssey' Film Fest Gent will be conducting a concert on October 18th of music from films that take place in space.

We discover the musical richness of different generations of composers who gave their own sound to traveling through the universe. The concert also brings a piece of cosmic film music history to life, with an emphasis on the great composers of the seventies, eighties and nineties of last century, supplemented by work by contemporary colleagues.

Brace yourself for the space operas of John Williams, Jerry Goldsmith, John Barry, Elliot Goldenthal, Harry Gregson-Williams and Cliff Martinez. And let yourself be overwhelmed and carried away by the soundtracks from 'Star Wars', 'Star Trek', 'Alien', 'The Black Hole', 'Solaris', 'The Martian', 'Black Mirror: USS Callister' many others. We also premiere a fragment of the original score of Alex North for '2001: A Space Odyssey'; a score that Kubrick replaced at the last moment with Strauss's existing classical music.

DAY 5

Friday 19 October 2018

20:00-22:30 Gaika Plays Akira

30 years ago (!) the Japanese anime film ‘Akira’ came out, written and directed by Katsuhiro Otomo. This casually brilliant post-apocalyptic anime – based on the manga comic series of the same name – soon acquired cult status. With its kinetic energy, limitless imagination and dystopian themes, ‘Akira’ influenced a whole generation of manga and science fiction lovers.

One of those fans is London producer and rapper GAIKA, who performed at Vooruit in March 2018, providing the phenomenal closing act to the hip-hop festival Out The Frame. His work is dark, experimental and catchy as hell: imagine a mix of triphop, dancehall and grime, streaked through with afrofuturistic politics. During VIDEODROOM, GAIKA will pay homage to ‘Akira’ with a complete remix of the film in both sound and image. An all-new, all-enveloping, once-in-a-lifetime experience!
