Yves Gourmeur (BE) was born into a family of music lovers and began his musical studies when he was six years old. First starting with the piano and then at age 8 taking up the trumpet. As the piano was his main focus, he studied all the great classical composers, but Yves was already attracted to many other musical styles and at the early age of seventeen he began the demanding job of lounge pianist.
Yves graduated at the conservatories of Brussels and Mons and when he was 24, he became a part time lecturer at the Mons Royal Conservatory. At the same moment, he abandoned the idea to only become a classical soloist and took time to discover and learn more modern kinds of music. He now plays with passion latino and gipsy music, rock, pop and jazz, alongside his classical projects. Passionate lover of spontaneous music in all its forms, Yves created improvisation classes at the Academy of Arts of Mons and established a workshop around music for silent films. He then decided to develop his skills as a film music composer and devote himself exclusively to the composition of film music. In 2018 he composed the score for the film The Hummingbird Project (The Wall Street Project), about two cousins from New York dreaming to build a fiber-optic cable straight line between Kansas and New Jersey, making them millions. The film by Kim Nguyen, starring Jessie Eisenberg, Salma Hayek and Alexander Skarsgard, got Yves a nomination at the Canadian Screen Awards. Both the director and Yves enjoyed working together. Director Kim Nguyen said about this collaboration: "Yves has done a very demanding job and frankly, his music turned out to be one of my favorite soundtracks written for my films. The music fits the film so well giving it elegance and something refined. A unique angle!"
Yves’ most recent projects are the short films Resurrection (nomination at Top Indie Film Awards), Julia, Trauma Zéro and Les hommes perdus. He is also involved in animation film, completing the score for The Street Party, a Belgian-Danish coproduction, last year and composing several episodes of the hugely popular series Geronimo Stilton. Yves is equipped with his own recording studio and affiliated with the production sound company General Score (Mons, Belgium).
