Hannes De Maeyer is one of Belgium’s most versatile composers, best known for his collaboration with director duo Adil El Arbi & Bilall Fallah (Gangsta, Black, Bad Boys for Life). His scores range from pure electronic to impressive symphonic instrumentation, as well as everything in between.
After composing for several projects produced by A Team Productions such as Land of the Heroes and Baghdad Messi by worldwide praised director Sahim Omar Kalifa, Hannes meets the talented Belgian directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah. They collaborate on their first feature Image, quickly followed by Black, awarded with the Discovery award during the 40th edition of TIFF in 2015.
‘As velvety-dark as the pic’s dynamic imagery can be, the co-directors surprise by relying on a light, Gustavo Santaolalla-sounding folk-string score during character moments, going “back to black” with more stereotypically thuggish hip-hop tracks whenever violence looms.’ (Variety)
For El Arbi & Fallah’s flashy third feature Gangsta (Patser), De Maeyer created the perfect musical power shot, full of games vibes and inspired by several iconic 80s film scores such as Terminator or Scarface, all combined with contemporary electronic influences.
Hannes’ recent projects include Rafaël, a Dutch romantic drama by award-winning filmmaker Ben Sombogaart and one of nine films shortlisted to be the Dutch entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 91st Academy Awards and the German feature Immenhof – Das Abenteuer eines Sommers, an immensely popular youth film by Sharon von Wietersheim, which premiered in January 2019 and attracted over 500.000 fans to German theaters.
In 2019, Hannes composed the impressive symphonic and critically acclaimed score to Belgian war epic Torpedo and also co-composed – in collaboration with French composer Eloi Ragot – the original score to the nerve-wrecking tv-series Keizersvrouwen (Women of the Night), currently internationally available on Netflix.
‘This is a suprisingly mature sounding work that has its roots firmly planted in the silver age of film music with an abundance of thematic action cues like we used to get from composers such as Elmer Bernstein and Jerry Goldsmith when they scored war movies.’ (Movie Music International)
His latest projects include De Stig, a moving and inspiring documentary about cyclist Stig Broeckx as well as the Irish Tour de France drama The Racer, selected for this year’s SXSW and set to release later this year. Hannes is currently working on on El Arbi & Fallah’s newest project Rebel and the animation series Ninja Express. Later in 2020, he started composing for Immenhof – Das große Versprechen, the second feature from the popular German franchise.
Hannes won the World Soundtrack Award for Best Original Score for a Belgian Production for Torpedo at the 2020 World Soundtrack Awards.
