Walter Murch gives Film Sound Seminar in Ghent
The film music seminar, which is organised yearly by the Ghent Film Festival and University College Ghent, will be somewhat different this time round. The focus will not be on classic film music but rather on sound design. The reason behind this decision is that legendary film editor and sound designer Walter Murch will be in attendance. He has received three Oscars for his work: Best Sound for Coppola’s Apocalypse Now (1979), as well as Best Sound and Best Film Editing for Minghella’s The English Patient (1996). The Film Sound Seminar with Walter Murch will be held on Thursday 20 October from 10 a.m. till 4 p.m. at the Ghent Film Festival (Kinepolis 8).

The Ghent Film Festival bids farewell to hit song writer Jerry Leiber
Today the Ghent Film Festival bids farewell to a friend, rock ‘n’ roll composer Jerry Leiber, who passed away from a heart attack in Los Angeles, US yesterday. Leiber joined forces with Mike Stoller to become one of the main composer duos in rock ‘n’ roll history. Leiber was no stranger to the Ghent Film Festival. In 1990 he sat on the jury for the international competition “The impact of music on film”. Other members of the jury included Mike Stoller, Mike Figgis and Fons Rademakers. In 2005 Leiber and his friend Stoller were invited to the World Soundtrack Awards to receive a Lifetime Achievement Award. Unfortunately Leiber couldn’t make it due to ill health, so Stoller accepted the award, also on his friend’s behalf. Jerry Leiber passed away aged 78.
