WSA Discovery of the Year nominees announced

The five nominees for the Discovery of the Year Award, via which the World Soundtrack Academy rewards up-and-coming talent from the previous year, have been announced. The award will be granted during the World Soundtrack Awards & Concert on 22 October at the Kuipke Events Centre in Ghent.

World Soundtrack Lifetime Achievement Award for disco pioneer Giorgio Moroder

The 11th World Soundtrack Awards, which will be held at the Kuipke Events Centre in Ghent on 22 October, welcome a new star in their line-up: none other than three-time Oscar winner and "father of disco" Giorgio Moroder (Midnight Express, Flashdance, Scarface). During the awards ceremony, he will be conferred a Lifetime Achievement Award for his exceptional career in film music. A selection from his work will be performed live by the Brussels Philharmonic, conducted by Dirk Brossé.

World Soundtrack Academy Announces 2011 Nominees!

The World Soundtrack Academy has announced the list of its nominees for the 2011 Awards to be presented in three categories: Film Composer of the Year, Best Original Score of the Year and Best Original Song Written Directly for a Film. The names of the winners will be announced at the World Soundtrack Awards & concert on Saturday, October 22, the closing night of the Ghent International Film Festival.

Patrick Duynslaegher Artistic Director of Ghent Film Festival

As of 1 September 2011, Patrick Duynslaegher will be the Artistic Director of the Ghent Film Festival. Managing Director Jacques Dubrulle says he is delighted that Patrick has agreed to join the festival team. "This appointment is part of the Board of Directors' plan to further develop the important role the Ghent Film Festival plays in the film culture of Flanders and beyond. Patrick will be able to count on the support of several top team members, who have already won their spurs." Patrick Duynslaegher himself comments: "After many years in film journalism, I am thrilled that I can now put my passion for cinema to good use serving the most dynamic film festival in Belgium. I am joining an enthusiastic team to develop new initiatives and ideas in the fast-evolving image culture, surrounded by an explosion of new media where the world of films must constantly reassess itself."

Dirk Brossé performs twice in Hollywood Bowl sell-out

On 3 and 4 June, Dirk Brossé conducted two sell-out 'Star Wars in Concert' performances at the Hollywood Bowl. These film music concerts have been touring the world since April 2009 and combine the unforgettable music by composer John Williams with specially edited scenes from the six Star Wars films. The two concerts in Los Angeles, performed by the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, attracted 50,000 spectators.

Ghent Film Festival appoints Dirk Brossé as Music Director

The Board of Directors of the Ghent Film Festival has appointed Dirk Brossé as Music Director. This further strengthens the successful collaboration spanning several years between the Ghent Film Festival and Dirk Brossé. As Music Director of the Ghent Film Festival, Brossé will serve as adviser for the compilation and programming of classical film music concerts. He will also be closely involved in the realisation of the festival's other musical projects, such as CD and DVD recordings.

'Once' is heading to Broadway

If you caught John Carney's indie romance 'Once' and thought it would make a great Broadway production, you aren't alone. Producers John N. Hart Jr., Jeff Sine and Fred Zollo snagged the live theater rights to the film back in 2008 with initial plans to have it on the stage for the 2010-2011 theater season. At the 2007 Ghent Film Festival 'ONCE' won the Young Jury's Xplore Award.

Film music seminar with Stephen Warbeck at the 37th Ghent Film Festival

On October 20th, the Ghent Film Festival and Hogeschool Ghent are organising a film music seminar with composer Stephen Warbeck (Shakespeare in Love, Billy Elliott) at which he will present his working method, illustrating it with music and film clips. The seminar will take place at the Zwarte Zaal of KASK (Bijloke site) from 10 am to 4 pm. The main question is How does film music contribute to the narrative structure of a film?

Registrations Ghent Film Festival composition competition opened

The annual composition competition organised by the Ghent Film Festival with the support of SABAM kicks off once again. Young European film music composers are given the chance to compete for the prize of 2,500 Euros. In addition, they can have their composition performed live by the Brussels Philharmonic - the Flemish Radio Orchestra during the presentation of the World Soundtrack Awards on 23 October. This is the official closing event of the 37th Ghent Film Festival (12-23 October 2010). Applicants can register up to and including 30 June 2010.

Giacchino wins his first Oscar for 'Up'

Michael Giacchino won his first Academy Award last night. The Oscar for 'Best Original Score' went to his widely acclaimed score for the Pixar hit Up, a score that previously has been awarded the Golden Globe, the BAFTA and a Grammy among many other honours. Giacchino spoke about the dream coming true in his acceptance speech, saying to the "kid out there who do not have a support system" that "if you want to be creative, go out there and do it. It is not a waste of time." In 2004 Giacchino was named 'Discovery Of The Year' at The World Soundtrack Awards for his score for another Pixar movie The Incredibles.

Elliot Goldenthal, Howard Shore & Hans Zimmer at 11th World Soundtrack Awards

Concert dedicated to the memory of Ronni Chasen

On Saturday, October 22nd at 8:00p.m., Oscar winners Elliot Goldenthal, Howard Shore, and Hans Zimmer will be the distinguished guests at the closing ceremony of the 38th Ghent Film Festival at the Kuipke in Ghent. Once again, the Kuipke Event Centre in Ghent will be transformed into a concert hall for an audience of more than 3000 for this 11th edition of the World Soundtrack Awards & Concert. Following the annual presentation of the prestigious film music awards, the Brussels Philharmonic - the Orchestra of Flanders - will perform a singular selection from the three great masters' extensive oeuvres conducted by Dirk Brossé. As always, the live music will be accompanied by striking film footage. The concert is being dedicated in memory of Ronni Chasen, longtime representative and friend of the film festival.

Composition contest for young European film music composers

Young European film music talent will have another chance to win the highly sought after SABAM Award For Best Young European Composer. This award was created by the World Soundtrack Academy and is worth €2500 and the live performance of the winning composition by the Brussels Philharmonic - the Orchestra of Flanders during the presentation of the World Soundtrack Awards on 22 October in the Kuipke in Ghent. This is the official closing ceremony of the 38th Ghent Film Festival (11-22 October 2011). Candidates must be under 36 and must be European or have been born in Europe. Registrations will be accepted via this link until 30 June 2011.

Bond composer John Barry dies aged 77

Composer John Barry, famous for his work on Born Free, Out of Africa and the James Bond films, has died in New York of a heart attack aged 77. Barry received a lifetime achievement award at the Ghent Film Festival in October 2010. A concert with Barry's most famous music was held for an audience of more than 2500 people. Due to his medical condition, John Barry could not be present in Ghent to accept his award. He asked colleague David Arnold to accept the Award in his place. John Barry deeply regretted his absence from the concert and expressed his disappointment in a warm-hearted video addressed to the Ghent Film Festival and especially to Jacques Dubrulle and Marian Ponnet.

The Golden Globe Awards are an accolade presented by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) to recognize excellence in film, television both domestic and foreign.

Alexandre Desplat wins Award for Film Composer and Best Film Score of the Year

The World Soundtrack Academy announced tonight the winners of the World Soundtrack Awards 2010, the closing event of the 37th Ghent International Film Festival. Alexandre Desplat was chosen as Film Composer of the Year 2010 and took home the award for Best Orginal Film Score of the Year (Fantastic Mr. Fox) for the second year in a row. Ryan Bingham & T Bone Burnett received the World Soundtrack Award for Best Original Song Written for Film ('THE WEARY KIND' from "Crazy Heart") and Abel Korzeniowski is the Discovery of the Year Award and Public Choice for A Single Man. John Barry received the World Soundtrack Lifetime Achievement Award.

Film Festival Ghent celebrates 10th anniversary World Soundtrack Awards

The World Soundtrack Awards, an awards presentation honoring the best in film music established by the Ghent International Film Festival's World Soundtrack Academy in 2001, has announced an all star line up to usher in its 10th year. Ten world class composers will be appearing live in concert at the awards presentation in Ghent, Belgium on October 23rd. Film Music Legend, John Barry, In Concert At The Ghent Film Festival

On Thursday October 21, 2010 five-time Oscar winner, John Barry's music will be performed live in concert at the Ghent International Film Festival. This unique, one-night-only event will be held at 8.30 pm at 't Kuipke Concert Hall in Ghent. The 80 members Brussels Philharmonic will be performing selections from many of Barry's classic scores including Goldfinger, Mary Queen of Scots, Out of Africa, Dances with Wolves and Midnight Cowboy, conducted by Nicholas Dodd. As always, the concert will be accompanied by a video presentation of film clips.

Alexandre Desplat Film Composer of the Year & Best Film Score of the Year

The World Soundtrack Academy announced tonight the winners of the World Soundtrack Awards 2009, the closing event of the 36th Ghent International Film Festival. The 9th edition of the World Soundtrack Awards was once again a highlight for film music professionals and fans. Two time Oscar nominee, Alexandre Desplat, was chosen as Film Composer of the Year 2009 and also took home the award for Best Original Film Score of the Year (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button). Double Oscar winner, A.R. Rahman, won Best Original Song Written for Film for Jai Ho (Slumdog Millionaire). Nico Muhly was the World Soundtrack Academy's new discovery of the year with the score for The Reader and three time Oscar winner Marvin Hamlisch was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award.
